Swim Team Registration
Our 2015 Hammerheads and Makos swim meets will be evenings this year. The meet dates are already posted on the website. If you are registering new swimmers, you may click here for an overview of our swim programs. Registration for the 2015 Hammerheads, Makos and Rookies is $160 per swimmer, $185 per swimmer for non-residents of the City of Smyrna. Coaches have requested that we please have swimmers of working parents, who are under age 11, practice during the hour. The practice hour is open for any age group swimmer who is unable to practice during his/her regularly assigned practice time because of summer camps, evening sports practices, etc. Once school is out, swimmers ages 5 – 8 typically practice from , swimmers ages 9 and 10 typically practice from , and swimmers ages 11 – 18 typically practice from . Practices are held through .
If your swimmer is age 4, or your swimmer is age 5 to 8 and is unable to swim a lap of freestyle and backstroke unassisted at swim evaluations, (s)he will be assigned to our Rookie Program. Rookie practices will not begin until . Our coach to swimmer ratio is much smaller in the Rookie Program and we simply do not have the coaching staff to safely begin the Rookie Program until school is out. Rookies will have morning and evening practice times to choose from. In May, you will be able to sign up for a ½ hour Rookie practice time that will be your Rookie’s practice time for the summer.
Swim evaluations will happen after registration. We are still working on securing space at an indoor pool so we can conduct evaluations. As soon as those arrangements are made, you will be notified and asked to schedule a time to come for an evaluation. Only new swimmers ages 4 to 10 and returning rookies must be evaluated. We may ask swimmers on wait lists, especially 5 - 8 year old swimmers, to come to evaluations as these are the ages of most rookies.
New Swimmers Age 4
All swimmers who are age 4 on or before , must register as Rookies. The Cobb County Swim League only allows children age 5 or older as of to swim in meets. To qualify for the Rookies, your child must be able to jump in the water and make it back to the side unassisted. Rookie practices will begin .
New Swimmers age 5 and 6
If you have a swimmer age 5 or 6 as of who you want to be in the Rookies Program and not on one of the competitive summer league teams, go ahead and register for the Rookies. If you want your swimmer to be on the Makos or Hammerheads, register for the appropriate age group and choose Unknown/Other for the team selection. You will be given an opportunity during registration to state your team preference. Please note that there is no difference between the teams, and swimmers from both teams practice together. All new swimmers who are ages 4 to 10 must be evaluated to make sure they can swim a lap of freestyle and backstroke unassisted to be on the Hammerheads or Makos.
New Swimmers Ages 7 to 18
All new swimmers who are ages 7 to 18 as of should register in their appropriate age group and choose Unknown/Other for the team selection. You will be given an opportunity while you are registering to state your team preference. We will make team assignments in April. All new swimmers who are ages 4 to 10 must be evaluated to make sure they can swim a lap of freestyle and backstroke unassisted to be on the Hammerheads or Makos. Please note that there is no difference between the swim teams. Both teams practice together.
I tried to register and it said there is a wait list, now what? Our 12 and under age groups are very popular and when you try to register, you may find there is already a wait list for your younger swimmer(s). Please go ahead and complete the registration process and add your swimmer to the wait list. Once we begin swim assessments, we are usually able to offer many waitlisted swimmers the opportunity to join one of our teams. You will not be asked to pay, nor will the software allow you to pay, until you are released from the wait list.
Why are there wait lists? We need to make sure we don't end up with too many swimmers in one age group on either team. Typically, the 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 age groups are our largest groups. We are allowed only 120 swimmers total at each meet and if we end up with too many swimmers in one age group, it will not be enjoyable for swimmers in that group. We typically keep about 150-160 swimmers on each team's roster so we can get close to the 120 swimmer total each meet. We know you have vacations and other activities scheduled so these numbers have worked out for a long time. We can guarantee all swimmers will swim in at least 4 of the 5 meets.
